3 IELTS Tricks to Instantly Improve Your Listening, Reading and Overall Exam Performance

Others think that getting a score of at least 7.0 in the four sections of the IELTS examination is quite impossible. Of course, it is not. A score of 7.0 is possible with a little hard work in reviewing for the IELTS examination.

Both the reading and the listening create an atmosphere of anxiety to candidates as the questions in these exams are all objective. Once you get it incorrectly, you automatically lose a point. This is exactly the reason why most of the candidates in the IELTS examination focus more on practicing listening and reading exercises. Is there any trick in improving one’s skills in these sections?

It is fairly easy to improve your listening and reading abilities for the tests – and even with your overall exam performance. Here is what you should consider a part of your IELTS training.

  1. Use the English language around you. If you are in a working environment where English is commonly spoken, then you have to take advantage of this. Man non-native English speakers are reluctant to speak in the language since they are afraid of committing a mistake or generally, getting embarrassed with their English skills. However, with constant practice, one can noticeably see the difference with their skills in terms of fluency and confidence in using the language.
If your working environment does not use much English, you can always use the internet to practice. There are lots of blogs to be read online. Practice reading this blogs and learn vocabulary and grammar. Also, there are video sites where you can watch English lessons to help you improve your skills.

  2. Do one English activity in one day. Come up with a timetable wherein one skill in English will be utilized. Say for example, in Monday, you will have to listen to podcasts and practice dictation with it. On Tuesday, you will have to pick a magazine or newspaper article and write your reaction about it. These small things help one practice listening and reading skills. The more exposure one gets with the language, the better he performs, and there is a great improvement with his skills. Always choose an activity in a day that you enjoy. Remember that learning English should be fun as well so as not to bore yourself with serious readings.

  3. Do practice tests. What’s the best thing to do to be familiar with the question types in the examination is to do practice tests. There are available practice tests online with sample answers to help you with your IELTS training. However, to make your IELTS training more intensive, you can enroll in IELTS review centers to be guided by coaches and teachers for the test. These centers have a weekly mock exam to gauge the student’s progress in their IELTS training program.

Getting a score better than 7.0 is totally possible. What candidates need to do is to constantly expose themselves in an environment where English is used, do activities to enhance their English abilities, and do IELTS exercises to be familiar with the test. These are simple yet proven effective for the IELTS test.
